How our Water Butts are made
Our water butts are made from 1.6mm galvanised steel sheet. The square versions — available in large and small — share the same construction method: the steel is bent to form the base and two of the sides as a single piece. The remaining two sides are bonded using a waterproof adhesive and sealant, then secured with galvanised coach bolts and rubber washers. There is no welding in the body of the square water butts.
The top frame is formed from square steel rod, welded into a frame and fitted with our signature ball finials, which are welded to the frame before the whole assembly is hot-dip galvanised. The flanges tie the structure together and give the finished water butt its rigidity.
Our RHS-branded round water butt is constructed differently: the cylindrical body is formed from two curved pieces of galvanised steel sheet, bolted to a spun galvanised steel base.
We fit a brass tap with a matt chrome finish and hose union as standard. Plastic taps — the norm on cheaper water butts — degrade in UV light and can crack or seize. Brass doesn’t. If you ever need to replace it, get in touch and we’ll confirm the thread size — any good plumbers’ merchant will stock a suitable brass replacement.
We can drill a hole in the body free of charge, to suit either an overflow pipe or the incoming supply from your chosen rainwater diverter kit. We place it where you want it — typically 5cm below the top. Let us know when ordering.
The water butt accepts a standard downpipe diverter kit (68mm round or 65mm square).
Finish: before despatch we treat the exterior with a specialist light acid that etches the bright galvanised surface and starts the weathering process. Wind, sun and rain then continue the job — the aged appearance develops naturally over the years in the garden.

Following your order we will send you an invoice for the goods with payment options. Once full payment has been received we will put your items into production. As all our products are made to order please allow up to 28 days for delivery.

When you receive your product please immediately remove all packaging and leave the product out in the open air.
