How our Planters are made
Our Georgian-style planters are hand-formed from 1.2mm galvanised steel sheet. Galvanising — a hot-dip zinc coating process — is what gives the steel its long-term rust resistance. It’s not a paint or a coating that wears away; the zinc is bonded metallurgically to the steel surface.
The profile of each planter — the tapered sides, the rolled top edge, the proportions — is based on traditional lead cistern designs from the Georgian period. We’ve adapted those proportions for modern gardens, which is why they sit comfortably alongside both period architecture and contemporary planting schemes.
Each planter is made individually in our Bedfordshire workshop. The seams are hand-soldered and the base is drilled for drainage before despatch. Before despatch, we treat each planter with a specialist light acid that etches the bright galvanised surface and begins the weathering process. Wind, sun and rain then continue the job — the aged appearance develops naturally over the years at the customer’s location.
Galvanised steel planters will outlast plastic and fibreglass alternatives by many years. They are suitable for year-round outdoor use in the UK climate.
