Our zinc planters are made of heavy gauge galvanised steel, finished with a special treatment to give them an aged patina, and are decorated in a traditional Georgian style complete with Tudor roses and decorative balls. They have myriad uses in the garden, including as containers for topiary box balls, roses, small shrubs, trees and flowers.

Choosing a steel planter for a UK garden

Garden planters have to survive a great deal: frost, standing water, UV light, the weight of compost, and roots that expand as plants establish. The material you choose determines how well they hold up.

Fibreglass and plastic planters are light and initially budget-friendly, but their surface finishes fade and they can crack at the rim or base over time, particularly in the kind of sustained cold we see in UK winters. Terracotta is beautiful but frost-sensitive — even ‘frost-proof’ terracotta can fail if water gets into a crack and freezes.

Galvanised steel is a different category entirely. The zinc layer that protects the steel from rust is part of the metal itself — it won’t wear away with cleaning, won’t be affected by UV, and handles freeze-thaw cycling without cracking. A well-made steel planter is a permanent fixture, not a seasonal purchase.

Our planters are partially inspired by classic Georgian cisterns — the proportions and profile are drawn from historic originals, adapted for modern gardens. They work as well against a contemporary rendered wall as they do outside a period property. The surface is acid-etched before despatch; the patina then develops naturally with wind, sun and rain over the years.

All our planters are drilled for drainage as standard. They are made individually in our Bedfordshire workshop and are suitable for year-round outdoor use in the UK.

Product details

The planters are made from 1.5 mm galvanised steel. Their bottom panels are drilled with drainage holes to allow free drainage, and there are special 6cm feet in each corner to keep the base clear.

All the ornamentation is galvanised separately, and they also include galvanised coach bolts to hold them together. The decorative balls and Tudor roses, as well as the legs, are galvanised cast iron.

The hand-finishing process on our zinc planter gives an aged patina that can be variable and will alter over time and location, meaning we cannot guarantee that the finish on all our planters will be identical.

The planters are available in six different sizes from small zinc plant pots to large zinc planters and metal plant troughs. The following dimensions are approximate and are based on the actual size of the container, excluding the legs and ball decorations.

Our galvanised metal planters and galvanised trough are made from galvanised steel for durability. Galvanising steel is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to our galvanised steel planters in order to protect them from rust making our zinc garden planters last much longer than planters made from other materials.
